Every Jamaican artiste has something to say about the covid-19 vaccine, whether positive or negative. However, these anti-vaxxers are no different, as they blatantly spread their views to their fans across various social media platforms. Renowned Jamaican artists like: Buju Banton, Chronixx, Tanya Stephens, Sizzla, and Spragga Benz wear the badge of Top Jamaican anti-vaxxer artists.
Many anti-vaxxers like these artists listed above have similar perceptions of where they stand with the covid-19 vaccine. One of the key assertions from all these artists is that they have one common belief, “COVID-19 vaccine is a money-making thing and the government is just trying to sell out the country.”
In a video posted on the infamous Buju Banton’s Instagram page, he echoed fulminated remarks, “ Wi tiad a these intellectual fools tryna tell us how to live our lives, why uno nuh guh fine the cure fi cansa if uno suh smart?” He concluded with multiple lines of expletives, saying “Free mi people, mi nah wear no mask!”
It’s quite contrary that he is asking expert scientists and doctors to find the cure for cancer yet Rastafarians are completely against the Western medicine revolution and they would be hesitant to use any drug treatment for fear of contaminating their body. There’s no way Buju Banton would take the cure for cancer due to his Rastafarian beliefs.

Despite the controversy, Buju has received countless support from other Jamaican musicians such as Chi Ching Ching and Spragga Benz. Carlton Errington Grant, better known as Spragga Benz, in his recent single titled, “Vaccinated” and this song has caught the attention of his 224k followers on Instagram, along with non-followers like Minister of Health, Dr. Christopher Tufton, who strongly opposed the lyrics of the saying, ” it flies in the face of science and unfortunately undermines the most crucial response to the threat of covid-19.” In the song, Spragga, reiterated that “ Vaccinated and still guh catch covid, wi sorry fi dem and dem docta bizniz, Fyah!!!”

Chronixx, one of Jamaica’s top reggae artists, hinted at his stance in an Instagram post in April, writing, “Not buying the COVID-19 [thing].” Nature is a great shelter and a safe haven for me. These tech-heads and warheads can’t talk bout no rasta man’s health. Never!” He has since deleted the post after all the backlash but this doesn’t mean that he doesn’t stand by his previous words. However, a user commented that “it is not surprising that most Rastafarians are non-COVID-19 believers, many rastas see conspiracy everywhere and in everything.”
Which could be true but who knows? Even Sizzla, decided to jump on the anti-vaxxer train with his remarks in his Instagram live when he said, “we a fallah babylon wid dem liad program and agenda bout dem covid-19… be careful what you doing do not sell out Jamaica!”

Additionally, Tanya Stephens is one of the first female entertainers to announce unequivocally that she will not travel to any country where her human rights must be surrendered in order to get admittance. This goes to show that she is not going to take the covid vaccine whether or not it is a requirement to travel to foreign countries.
Amidst all the anti-vax talk, the Ministry of Health of Jamaica, on Monday, January 17, 2022, recorded 1,542 more Covid cases in the last 24 hours with over 2500 deaths across the island. Is this reality a reflection of the anti-vaxxer’s influence on those who listen to them? It is up to you to make your personal choice. Covid vaccine or strictly anti-vaxxer?
